South American Black Metal

written By Crin

South American Black Metal like the Asian scene, is pretty much an enigma to the western world. Unless you are an underground web surfer, it’s near on impossible to track down the surprisingly vast array of bands that make upon the aforementioned scenes. The Brazilian and Mexican Black Metal communities are far more cohesive in numbers and dedication than most European countries. The ethics and raw adrenaline of the music is still very much in tune with what was happening in Europe in the early nineties.
Us westerners may still enjoy our much distilled Black Metal and the polished marketable Satanic imagery that surrounds the music, but for what Black Metal is worth nowadays, there is little to really stimulate the soul in terms of pure blazing Black Metal passion. The very phrase Black Metal has been so watered down by the industry that very few European bands can ignite the ghastly aura that heralded its conception.
Black Metal was never meant to be consumed by the masses. Its indignant abrasive tones should by rights make most of us walk way. It is a genre that in its natural state exists ignored by the general metal fraternity.
To unearth this seemingly lost world of primeval noise you need to step out of the trend saturated western world [with possibly a few eastern European countries being an exception] and immerse your self in the melancholic realms of a darker beyond. In other words check out the already explored Asian Scene and the following South American scene.

Argentina
Inferi
Black Death metal taking their influences from bands like, Immortal, Usurper, Sodom etc. The album ‘The Call of the Dark Side’ is a 45-minute trip into raging Black Thrash. Argentina is a land of many a Death band and yet Inferi are a rare exception to the rule.
Requiem Aeternam
Black/ Death. The band have an album titled ‘Eternally Dying’ out on Furias Records.

Bolivia
Lilith
Melodic symphonic Black-Doom. The Album ‘The Conquering of the Eternal Wisdom’ is a promising debut.

Brazil
Abolish
Chaotic black metal in the vein of, Dark Throne meets Dark Funeral. The band have a demo titled ‘Give me Power Through Blasphemy.
Arum
Fast Black Metal with acoustic parts. The current album ‘Fierce Everlasting Tempest’ is out on Demise Records.
Atanab
Black Gothic Metal. The band have a demo titled ‘The Garden of Sad Souls.
Awake Thy Mighty Dragon
Intense Black Doom with keyboards. The band have a demo titled ‘The Original Sin’.
Beastial Atrocity
Goat fucking Black Metal sounding like its been dragged from the blood and flames of 1993. The band throw in venom and Sarcofago covers amongst the dirty sound of their own extreme Black Metal. The band have a ruthless demo titled ‘Cultum Luciferianum’.
Canis Lupis
Fast old style Black Metal. The band have an album out on Nailed Nazarene Records.
Carpatus
Daemon Est Deus Inversus
Raw Black war metal.
Defacer
Intense Black Doom with keyboards and lacerated vocals. The band have an album titled’ Nocturnal Mysteries’ available through Southern Spirit Records.
Demoniac Lord
Satanic Black Metal, raw, violent with symphonic atmospheres. The band have a demo titled ‘Lord of all Desire to the Life and After Death’ [Strange one that]
Folk Lord
Pagan inspired Blackness with a variety of medieval acoustic parts woven into the gloom. The band have a demo titled ‘Pagan Twilight’
Govanon
Merciless Black War Metal . The band have an album ‘Ancient Order of Cuthulu Serpent’ out on Blasphemy Productions.
Goat Emperor
Perverse Satanic Black Metal with vocals sounding like monks impaled on spikes. The Demo ‘Announcing the Neo-Aeon’ is like listening to raw flesh being mashed in a grinder.
Great Vast Forest
Pagan/ Black Metal. The band have an album ‘Battle-tales and Songs of Steel’ out via Evil Horde Records.
Infernus
Pagan aural destruction ignited with majestic atmospheres that emanated from the keyboards. Female vocals add to the atmosphere. The band have a demo titled ‘Host.’
In The Profound Abyss
Depressive Black Metal. The band have a demo titled ‘Descent into the Abyss. Distributed by Cursed Cross Productions
Kabarah
Fast and bare to the bone Black Metal. The band have a demo titled ‘The Magnificent Art of War’.
Malkuth
Harnessing many Scandinavian influences on the CD ‘The Dance of Satan’s Bitch’, Malkuth rip though a chaotic Black Metal cess pit clashing into many a bizarre area along the way to create an impressive album.
The band have also released the equally obscure ‘Distinguishe Bizzare Seduction’ CD.
Murder Rape
The bands third album ‘Evil shall burn inside Me Forever’ is out on Evil Horde Records.

Mystifier
One of the most influential South American Black Metalbands. Their first album ‘Wicca’ [Hellion Records} was released in 1992 / 3 years after the bands conception.
The second album ‘Goetia’ was released by cult French label Osmose in 1993. The third album was put on hold due to the bands frustration with so called "Satanic Christians" employing Nazi/ Fascist ideologies in Black Metal. This probably stems from the rising Norwegian scene at the time and what Mystifier felt was a joke. Osmose eventually released the album ‘The World is so Good that God doesn’t Live here anymore’ in 1996. Since then the band have appeared on many a tribute album and the fourth release ‘Profanus’ keeps the dark flame burning still.
Mysteriis
Probably one of the more inventive of the Brazilian Black Metal bands. The ‘About the Christian Despair’ album reveals a melodic chaos [if you can imagine that] bursting from the aggressive material.
The band have a mcd titled ‘Fucking in the name of God’ featuring a Dark Throne cover and 3 new tracks.
Nararatah
See Satan Father.
Necrocult
Ultra brutal noise taking influences from Beherit. The music is not recommended for any one who enjoys a bit of melody in their darkness. The demo ‘We’re possessed by all that is Evil’ is like listening to mid air collisions and animal bowel movements.
Occultan
The new album ‘Souvenirs the Evil, the Crucificacao’ is as raw and hateful as its predecessor, the primitive dirge infested ‘Bellicus Profanus. This band are pure underground.
Pactum
So called Luciferian Black Metal of impure symphonies and hate imbued atmosphere. The band have a demo titled ‘Ad Majorem Luciferi Glorium’. The band makes heavy use of keyboards to add to the dismal gloomy atmosphere. The album ‘Summa Imperii Satanae 666’ is an original stab at the Black Metal theme.
Postumous
Black/Death. The band have an album titled ‘My Eyes, They Bleed’ out on Evil Horde Records. The band are also due to appear on a ‘Tribute to Sarcofago’ cd. Their contribution being a grim cover of ‘Christ’s Death’.
Profane Creation
Chaotic yet melodic Black Metal. The band I believe are no longer in existence but if you hunt around the various distro’s you should pick up the bands two demo’s, ‘In name of Supreme Black Arts’ and ‘Supremacy’.
Sarcofago

Probably the most influential South American band concerning the Black Metal genre. The bands 1987 classic album ‘I..N.R.I. is a blend of Sodom/ Massacra with a punk backbone. Never astutely Black Metal [who really was in those days?], but nonetheless a defining influence on the South American scene as well as the early Norwegian scene.
Satan Father
This band have a split demo with Nararatah titled ‘Soused with Blood of Raped Angels/ Sodomizing Holy Nuns Till Death [In the Name of Satan]. The music is what you would expect. Raw clichéd Black fuzz wrapped in blasphemy.
Seges Findere
The Brazilian version of Impaled Nazarene. The Demo ‘Wolves in Battle Lust’ is faster than a turd strapped to a missile plummeting towards Hell.
Subliminal Murder
Intense ambient ritualistic noise similar to Abruptum/ Beherit. The ‘Cimmerian Reality’ Demo is a soundtrack of Satan vomiting on acid
Triumph
Extreme and perverse Black Metal that is reminiscent of the vile Polish acts, Infernum and Graveland. The band have a few demos available. ‘Perverse Kingdom’ and ‘discord I our Impulse’, being two of them.
