Interview with Breedapart
February 2008 by Steve Green

Breedapart are a ball crunching mass of energy. Forget the retro-Thrash revival, listen to the new breed of bands that are creating their own new set of rules. If there's any justice, Breedapart are going to be the next big thing out of the UK as their new, Wars Within The Mind Are Fatal EP is a must-have purchase. Discover what it is like for an up and coming band trying to make it big... The whole band answered the following questions.

Introduce Yourself:
You have a modern edge, but your sound is steeped in the tradition of say, Machine Head and Pantera. Where do your influences come from?

Well you can probably hear the influences like Machine Head, Lamb Of God, Pantera, Slayer, The Haunted etc... but we generally get influenced by bands we listen to right now. All Shall Perish, As I Lay Dying, All That Remains. We’re all individually influenced by different bands and I think that shows in our individual parts on the EP.

Your Dave Chang/Scott Atkins produced cd sounds huge. How was the experience and do you think you managed to capture your live sound in the studio?
Yeah definitely. We’re a straight up in-your-face band that cannot be ignored and that’s just how the EP is. You can’t put it on and then start talking over it. Dave Chang done a great job in capturing that chest pounding sound and that’s exactly what we deliver live. Lee did an amazing job on the vocals with Scott. He managed to get all the tracks nailed in a day. Straight up recording with no effects or layering. Brutal!

It’s hard to believe that you’ve crammed 7 songs into a 19 minute EP, as your songs never sound short. Was it a conscious effort to keep the songs short and sweet?
We did make an effort to keep them short. We’re trying to make new fans every time we play live and I’ve lost count the number of times I’ve seen bands that just play epics and I can’t tell if they’ve even started a new song. We need to keep people interested and that’s what it does. Short and Sweet!

On The Road:
You did a tour last summer with, amongst others, Irony of Christ and Sentenced To Suffer. How did it go for you?

Not very well. We played about 9 shows and learnt some very valuable lessons about touring. None of the shows were very well promoted and one of the shows we actually played to 5 people, 3 of which were in one of the bands. But hey, we were as tight as shit by the time we finished and we didn’t kill each other.

I read that you were kicked off a tour with Ted Maul and Man Must Die that you’d actually organized yourself!!! Was that a harsh lesson in how cruel the music industry can be?
It was a harsh lesson and we’re still bitter about it but we realised we need to be as heavily involved in the organisation side of things as possible. Booking agents are only out for themselves so you've got to be careful which booking agent you use. Ted Maul and Man Must Die are good friends of ours, so I’m sure we’ll put another one together soon.

What do you think is the best way forward for a band like Breedapart. Play any gig you can, whatever the venue, or be more selective and try and get decent support slots?
Last year we did exactly that. Played as many shows as humanly possible. Didn’t matter where, when or who with. It was good in the sense that we learnt to play tighter together and we also got to know who the good promoters were and where the best venues are, so I suggest doing that in your first year. But we did start feeling worn down with playing rubbish shows. We’ve decided that this year we would handpick the shows and get on decent line-ups. You can play 10 crap shows or one really good one. They both do the same thing.

With bands gaining overnight recognition because of internet, do you think it detracts from the old school way of building up a steady fan base and playing live to achieve success?
I definitely agree that you need to earn every fan and Machine Head pride themselves on that, which is why they are as big as they are. We want every fan we gain to be a hardcore Breedapart fan for life and follow everything we do. But you're right, “scene” bands can get successful overnight on the net but they don’t last. The kids forget bands as quick as they hear about them so you have to make an impression on every metaller you play to.

The Future:
One of the bands founding members, guitarist Rich, left last year. Have you managed to find a replacement for him yet?
No not yet. We’re finding it quite hard to find a guitarist but the search continues. Rich is a really good mate of ours but it didn’t come as a shock when he left. We could tell he wasn’t happy for quite a while. It will be hard to replace him, he was a fantastic guitarist and one of the best live performers around. At the moment we have an outstanding stand in guitarist (Jim – Sinuism) so we’re still playing live shows which is the main thing. Breedapart’s new guitarist is out there somewhere, so if your reading this, GET IN TOUCH!!

You are set to record your debut album with Tue Madsen and Jacob Olsen. How did you manage to hook up them?
Our drummer Alex got speaking to them somehow and they were really keen to work with us. We were set to go in with them in the summer this year but had to cancel because of the guitarist issue. Hopefully we will still be able to record with them soon.

How many songs have you got completed yet? And how is your sound progressing compared to the EP? Do you think you could expand your sound and create epics such as Metallica’s One?
Well that’s the plan. We want to keep the tracks relatively short again but we will have longer epic tracks in there. The brutality will still be there of course but we’re planning on making it a lot more about the guitars this time. Steve’s an amazing guitar player and we really want to show him off in the album. We’ve probably got about 15 tracks done at the moment but we’re aiming to get about 25 so we’ve got a good selection to chose from.

What are your goals for 2008?
Get massive (not by going to the gym), tour the gaff up and sneak onto the Download line up.
