Interview with Mick and Ponce from Destinity
June 2008 By Sam Thomas

Destinity are a French band who’ve been around for about ten years, but have not yet achieved much of a profile outside their native France. Their latest release, “The Inside” could be set to change all that…

How would you describe the sound of your band?
Mick (Vocals) : Destinity is an aggressive thrash/death metal band with a lot of melodies in its music! Since the beginning of the band we’ve always mixed an aggressive metal with a lot of melodies.

Ponce (Guitars) : We have a lot of Swedish metal influences.

Do you think that the name you have chosen, Destinity, reflects your musical direction? It sounds quite mystical, but that’s not the vibe I get from your music…
Mick : Our band name was not chosen for our musical direction. To be honest with you we were really young and we chose to find a mystical name and mix some words to be the only one with this name.

Which bands have influenced you?
Mick : So many bands could influence us! We always try not to be too much influenced by others and we don't forget to add our trademark elements and our feelings to our songs.

Ponce : There are two different kind of metal music that influenced us: the Thrash/Death metal scene and the melodic Scandinavian scene.

You’ve got a record deal with Lifeforce. Was it a deliberate move to seek out a label that wasn’t French?
Mick : Our old albums were released on Adipocere records (A French label company) and just before the recording of the 4th and last album untitled “The Inside” we signed with Rupture music (another French label company).
This album didn’t work out the way that we expected! We only sent a copy of the album to Lifeforce Records for a possible worldwide licence and they sent us an excellent offer with an extra deal for next releases. We are really enjoying working with them!

The Inside is a seriously good album. Did you feel that it was going to be so good when you were recording it? Did you have to work a lot harder to reach a new level?
Ponce : Thanks. We had spent a lot of time working on songs to reach the next level and each member worked a lot to record the best that we could.

Mick : Once we had written the songs we knew they were much better so we all worked harder to produce the best we could.

What do you hope The Inside will achieve? Will this be the start of you breaking into the rest of Europe?
Ponce : We hope to play more festivals and concerts all around Europe !

I’ve read recently that the French metal scene is full of talent, rivalling the Polish scene. Would you agree? Which bands should we be looking out for ?
Mick: I can't say if we are rivalling another country but I can say for sure we have excellent bands as Gojira, Benighted, Kronos, Dagoba and so many others... But the Polish scene is so amazing with bands as Behemoth, Hate, Vader and of course our friends from Decapitated (RIP Vitek), we toured with them in 2006 and they are an excellent band and he was a really nice guy !

You recently toured with Dew Scented and Severe Torture. What were the best and worst moments of the tour?
Ponce : The worst was when the engine broke down just before the end of the tour, in France. A funny memory for us now, but not at the time. We were totally tired after several days playing each night, and when that happened it was really shit.

Mick : The better moments were all parties in the nightliner and some really excellent concerts with a fuckin' atmosphere as Berlin, Leipzig and some others.

So far you’ve racked up an impressive 200 or so live dates. Do you enjoy touring, or is it something that has to be done?
Mick : We like to be on tour and our albums are made to permit us to tour!

Would you like to play in England if the opportunity arises?
Ponce : Of course ! England is a place where we have never been at this time and we don't know what English crowds are like! If the chance comes up, we will definitely enjoy checking it out!

Mick : So all organisers can contact us ! (Laughs).

What do you see yourselves doing in five years time?
Ponce : I really don't know, man ! (Laughs).

Mick : I will be in England ! (Laughs).

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Mick & Ponce : Thanks to all our fans and last but not least we want to thank you so much for your interest and help ! Stay fuckin' Metal !!!
