Interview with Primitai
April 2008 by AJ Carlile

Forget about current trends, Primitai are influenced by unadulterated Classic Heavy metal. If you are into the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Megadeth, then Primitai are a band you really should take the time to discover.

First off, congratulations on a brilliant debut album. "Through the Gates of Hell" was pretty fantastic. How difficult was it bringing this to fruition?
Not difficult but took time mainly because of cash as we were all impoverished students and some of us still are. We’d all say spending time in a studio recording material pushes you to become a better musician cos you have to stretch yourself to lay down what you want to achieve.

Some of my favourite tracks were "Rockin' in Hell" and "Primitillian Man". But what about you guys? Anything on the album you're particularly proud of?
We’d say we’re proud of all it and there’s a progression in the tracks because of the time the album took. ‘Buried Alive’ was one of the first tracks whilst ‘Rockin in Hell’ and ‘The Piper’ were the last and most people would say we’ve moved forward and continued to develop our own style.

How have others reacted to the album so far? How does it feel when the mainstream press (ie: Kerrang) like your album?
We’ve mainly had really good reviews. Some of have been fantastic, some have said we can stick our brand of metal up our own arses. We’re not getting carried away…It’s great to be talked about.

Going back to the beginning, how did you guys first come together to form Primitai?
We started about 5 years ago with Graham (guitar & vocals) and Nick (lead guitar) then on drums with a different bass player. It didn’t take long to realise that Nick was shit hot on the guitar so we became a 4 piece and we’ve had a couple of line up changes since. The band is now really solid with Jamie on bass and Chris on drums we’re getting some great live reviews. We’re all metal heads with the same influences and we’ve really stepped up over the past year with the release of the album and an increasing number of live gigs.

One thing I've been wondering is, how did you come up with the name? And who designed your (almost) unreadable logo?
We’d been trying to agree a band name and Primitai came from a stoned mate who was trying to say primeval and the name stuck. We dispute it’s unreadable as it’s perfectly legible after 10 pints of Stella or a couple of joints! Anyway, Graham’s had it tattooed on his arm so we’re not going to change it!

Who would you say has influenced your work?
Strong Iron Maiden, Megadeth and Judas Priest influences. Many people have likened us to Iron Maiden as we love guitar harmonies.

I hear Bruce Dickinson has been praising your album on his rock show. How does that feel?
Wicked as Bruce is God, only surpassed by supporting Maiden on tours and having the pick of Bruce’s groupies.

I understand you started off by doing a number of gigs. Is there anyone you particularly enjoyed touring with?
We’re happy to pay with anyone. Some of the bigger bands we’ve played with have been up themselves but mainly the bands we’ve worked with have been cool.

While we're on the subject, have you got any tour dates already planned? Is there anyone you'd like to tour with in the future?
We’ve been pretty busy with gigs of late and we’re currently building the next roster. Love to play with any of our influences.

Your album has been released, the reviews are coming in and the gigs have started. What comes next for Primitai, another album maybe, and where do you see yourselves in 5 years time?
We’ve already penned seven tracks for the next album and we’re including a couple of new songs in our current set. In five years we’d want to be full time professional musicians playing all the big venues.

Thanks for your time. Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Thanks for the interview and many thanks for the great review. Hope we can meet up again soon.
